It's just some way of not duplicating image numbers to save having problems when saving new images to your computer. I haven't tried the 2 button reset of my camera to see what happens, I do know that image number 8300 showed as shutter actuation number 3230 so all is well with the camera. I really don't think Nikon had to take over 5000 shots to be sure my camera was back focusing and subsequently fixed.

I sent it in with around 3000 shutter actuations and it came back and went to shot #8300 as my next image. Happened with my D7000 when it went to service. Take old card out of camera and reinsert the new card with images 1-5 on it. Same camera, old memory card inserted that has image #10,000 on it and take 1 image with the new camera will be image #10,001. Take this card out of the camera and set aside. I'll explain.īrand new camera, brand new memory card = image #1,2,3,4 and 5. a memory card put in the camera with image #96,843 and used to make 1 exposure (98,844) and then taken out of the camera will cause a change in your numbers. I'll be able to determine exactly when the shutter count started over at 1, but I'm not sure that will provide any helpful information.Īnother option is.

IDimager and report the exact same shutter count, so that rules out a software reporting malfunction. Regardless, images taken immediately after the one time I can document that I reset the camera using the two-button method prove that the shutter count was not affected.

The camera manual doesn't mention anything about the shutter count, including the discussions of what is changed when the two kinds of resets are implemented. If they used the one-button method, that would have reset the clock and I don't remember having to correct it. I used the two-button reset but I don't know what method the camera shop used. I do remember that I had to reset the camera once and that a camera shop might have reset it. It's not possible that I got to 100,000 shutter releases and the count had to start over. The shutter count of an image taken later that year in December is 1270. The shutter count of an image taken with my Nikon D80 in June 2010 has a shutter count of 26,080. The next picture file written by a camera like Canon 5D Mark II will be IMG_2001.JPG. This results in a much lower perceived shutter count than the true shutter count.įor example, let's say the filename is edited from IMG_9000.JPG to IMG_2000.JPG. Some cameras, such as the Canon 5D Mark II, will use the card filename to construct the name for the next picture. The file name is edited to lower the numerical suffix. If a blank flash card is inserted afterwards, some cameras like the Canon 60D will continue previous filename numbering for example, will write file IMG_4102.JPG when shutter count is 3752.The shutter count in this case will be only 3751. If a new flash card is inserted with a file IMG_4100.JPG, then the next picture taken with the camera will be written under IMG_4101.JPG. The numbering then continues with this higher suffix.įor example, if the last file written by the camera was IMG_3750.JPG, this indicates that the shutter count is 3750. A new flash card is inserted containing a picture file with higher numerical suffix. Here are examples when the filename does not indicate the true number of pictures taken with the camera. Using numeric suffix of filenames written by the camera on a flash card is not equivalent to camera's shutter count (the suffix resets to 0 after 9999).
